We Bought This Tesla Model 3 From Hertz: How Far Will It Go?
There are several highway range tests out there, so I decided to test the range of our 2022 Tesla Model 3 Base RWD in mixed driving conditions. This is the car we bought from Hertz that was a retired rental car. I put together a loop of 50+ miles that contained freeway, state highway, country roads, and city streets. Temperatures ranges from 87-95 degrees Fahrenheit and the test took me over 6 hours. Can it get its projection of 257 miles? Can it match the Bolt? I will be completing a similar test soon on our Fiat and LiveWire

I've ranged test my 2022 M3 RWD several times in SE AZ and SW NM. On a 131 mile trip at a near steady 60, with some hills, I was at 50% SOC. On the I-10, I can cruise for two hours at 84mph and arrive at a DCFC with about 10-15% SOC. Most tests show a ~5% buffer below zero SOC.

Why does it have the Tesla model y induction wheels and not the model 3 Aero wheels? Did these come on the car when you bought it from hertz or did you put them on yourself? This is probably why the range isn't accounting for with drag coeffecients.

Whoa, sentry mode must eat a lot of watts. Vampire power drain in EVs is atrocious. I have a 2011 Nissan Leaf and found if I leave it sit for a month I have to charge the "accessory" battery (regular 12volt car battery) in order to start it.

@@SpinnerEV EV with Sentry mode off there is still battery thermal being active (of course the temperature determines how much of a drain). Modern EVs can take the loss since their battery packs are so big (unlike my Leaf - only 24KWH mitigated with that accessory battery).

I would like to ask for your opinion. My daily commute has changed to 95 miles and I need a more efficient car than I have now. After many research it came down to the two exact vehicles you own. 2022 Bolt (~$ 16,000) and 2022 Tesla 3 (~$23,000). I only would use it for daily commute and charge it at home. Which one do you recommend? Which one has a better ride comfort and better on highway? Thank you advance!

    • @SpinnerEV

The Bolt is smoother, the Tesla is sportier. The Bolt sits the driver higher, the Tesla has more seat adjustments. The Bolt is a hatchback but the Model 3 has a huge trunk for a car its size. Bolt costs less up front, Tesla has more equipment standard. If fast charging is ever a need then the Tesla wins. Both are efficient and would meet your needs in my opinion. Try to sit in or test drive one of each, that’s how you’ll know.

Great video! I was looking at Hertz for both those cars and can't decide what I should do. I'm using a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV rental and really like the range in the warm weather. I'm getting a full charge right now of 290 with a "Max" range of 342. (which is incredible.) I also like the car overall. I can also go for the 2022 Tesla 3 Long Range and get the tax credit. Bottom line...a $5000 difference. So....What to get? I do Uber part time and know the drop in range on the Bolt in cold weather is brutal. At the same time, I'm hearing the Telsa battery degradation is not good. What would you do?

    • @SpinnerEV

It depends on what equipment you want and how often you’d fast charge. The Tesla will charge faster at a DC fast charger and has some other bell and whistles that my Bolt doesn’t have (it’s a 1LT). The Tesla's advantage is on the highway travelling at higher speeds. The aero advantages really add up. The Bolt is much better at the regen and the slower, mixed driving scenarios. We saw that with the first TFLEV EV torture test they did and the Bolt blew away it's EPA numbers significantly and was able to recoup a lot more power than the M3P they had in that test and actually won that first challenge. I think you will see a more clear cut advantage with the Tesla when you are on your road trip. It should excel in that role. I think you will be pretty happy with how it is going to work our for your road tripping. Better efficiency at speeds, faster charging, convenience of autopilot, the Tesla charging network and navigation all just make for a better road tripper for sure. Thanks for sharing! On an added note I have continued doing some digging on the LFP vs the NCA/NMC batteries. We have been told that the LFP's have the safety and longevity advantage, BUT I found the video from 2 years ago with Dr Jeff Dahn talking about the batteries and I think we have been marketed to on the LFP. Jeff points out the strengths and weaknesses and talks about how they need to improve the LFP's for the longevity that is already possible with the NCA/NMC batteries. Look up ECS Jeff Dahn on UA-cam and watch that presentation. I think it will give you some AH HA moments. I know learned a lot.

I was so used to the Bolt's "Guessometer" and wanted something similar on the Tesla. I now use the Energy app (have it pinned to the tray) and have it showing the projected range (actual based on driving style/conditions over the last 30 miles of driving.) This mimics the middle number on the Bolt's display. I'm now happy to see my "real" projected range now and can leave the battery icon in percent. As always, you share great information in your videos. Thank you!

I have had total normal tire expenses with my 2015 LEAF. Had the same set since 2019. Still plenty of tread on them. I think they will age out before they wear out. It’s front wheel drive and has a total of 85.5K miles on it. Front wheel drive. I got 40K miles out of my M Y OEM set of tires. I think people who have to replace them more frequently have a lead foot and drive the car like a race car. Anyone who races knows things wear out faster under acing conditions. People seem confounded by their mysteriously disappearing tires. They need to look no further than their own lead foot and harsh driving. Can’t blame them as it’s fun to drive a Tesla, but it’s not the cars fault if they drive it harshly, and then they blame the car.

I had a rental car from Philadelphia and went to Gettysburg. I had some serious range anxiety out there. I could not find a DC Fast Charger that worked and/or was available. Gettysburg has one DC Fast Charger at the park but it would not communicate with my car. In the City of Gettysburg I could not find a charger. I stoped at the Fire Station and they told me that they were unaware of one. I found 4 DC Fast Chargers (40 kWh) (not super fast) ChargePoint near East Petersburg (near Lancaster, PA) at a BMW, Kia and Hyundai dealer. It was extremely hot last week 99F and high humidity and the rental car was using a lot of AC. I also needed to go up to Stroudsburg (2 hours north of Philadelphia). I found an EVGo in Allentown at a Home Depot. 8 charges. A great set-up and fast (I had a Genesis G80) charging at 175 kWh. ABRP and Plug Share were pretty unhelpful. The ChargePoint app helped me immensely. Don't trust ChatGPT--it told me there was an Electrify America at a Walmart near Harrisburg. I called there and they said nope. Plug Share told me there was a Blink DC Fast Charger at a Whole Foods. I couldn't find it. I went into the store and the manager said--nope they took it out about a year ago. They tried to be helpful but they didn't know the difference between a J1772 (Level 2) and a DC Fast Charger.

The Bolt probably has the most conservative and/or the most accurate "Guess O Meter".

    What did the ESP cost?

    • @SpinnerEV
      @SpinnerEV 3 дні тому

I don’t recall exactly, I’d have to check the paperwork. It was more than this repair, I know that much, but this repair took a big chunk out of the cost.

Your screen is different than mine. I do not have the auto park options of standard versus Tesla. I wonder if it has to do with model or version of both. I have a 2024 MYLR. Software 2024.14.9/FSD 12.3.6

Glad you could get the bike into the Harley shop. That split to Livewire and no local support SUCKS. That would be a bad deal. I would want that Harley shop support also. Dealer support is a big deal. Seems like a bad move by Harley. OUCH, $1100 for the screen! Analog gauges sound pretty good at those prices. One time use mounting brackets??? Didn't plug the bike in... Are you supposed to charge to 100% with the Livewire? How does it do with your daily commute? I don't ride enough now to justify buying an electric bike so I am not tempted to jump. I have been out once this year on the bike for memorial day ride, and another trip to get a state required safety inspection and that is it. I need to take some time to ride, but priorities changed so my recreational time no longer prioritizes the bike like I once did. I do miss it. The Livewire does look and sound like fun.

I have a Chevy Bolt and regularly drive Ohio to North Carolina via West Virginia. The Bolt is famously sh1t on for slow dc fast charging, and West Virginia has like 4 dc fast chargers total. I've not had a problem and don't think you should worry either. I'm driving what could be one of the least desirable electric route/car combos without issue. Everywhere else is cake

I thought about getting a live wire, but got a Bolt instead. Same price. No contest.

Yes, I agree it's pretty frustrating when people keep stating the same misinformation over and over again. My 70 something parents have taken their ID.4 to the West Coast 3 times and a 4th trip to Las Vegas, also from Texas. It's not for everyone and every application but for most urban and suburbanites it works great.

Next year will be 10 years of EV ownership for me, about to hit 250k miles total. It's amazing how easy it really is to navigate far distances now. Even with my little bolt I've been able to go from the Carolinas to California only planning my next charge while charging, even went to see the grand canyon on the way. But Tesla makes it all just so much easier, we have rented s, 3, x, and y and loved all them starting with our first rental in 2017. About to buy a Model y after we rented one when we flew into dfw and drove up to Amarillo for a wedding. About to sit back and enjoy your trips video now, hopefully y'all stopped at palo duro canyon. 😀

We didn’t stop there on this one, but we did a few years ago. The trip was in our Subaru Crosstrek towing a teardrop camper back from Green River, UT. It’s a road trip in an ICE car but was a warm up for our EV road trip videos. But the video does have about 10-15 minutes of footage taken at Palo Duro Canyon State Park

I'm really warm on adding a Model 3 to my stable, but likely a Performance to replace my Mustang GT. Used EV prices have reallt declined and its a great time to get into one! I have a ton of EV content on my channel including experiences with our e-Golf and our new Ford F150 Lightning. I enjoy your content! Keep it up!

@Spinner EV: get the S3XY knob. It provides continuous autopilot that reengages autopilot after a lane change. Such a game changer…

That looks like a nice little pump until you got to where you have to screw the end of the hose onto the tire valves. I have a cheap little pump that I've had for about 8 years and it's good other than the screw end on the hose. Those types make it nearly impossilbe to get the perfect pressure once you have to unscrew it from the valve and it leaks air while doing so. One question. Does your Tesla really require 46 pounds?
